Have I posted about lucite before? I would have sworn that I had, but a quick search of this blog yielded no results of a post specifically about lucite. It's probably just as well because if I did I probably lied about it. Lucite is one of those things that I'm not sure if I love it or just think it's okay. As a new design enthusiast, and an obsessor of design blogs, sometimes the line for me is blurred when it comes to trends. Do I love it, or do I just think I do because clearly everyone else does?
It seems to me like every time I see a beautiful lucite piece in an incredibly designed room I decide I must have it somewhere in my home. There was a coffee table I saw on the cover of a magazine once that I obsessed over for months. I was DETERMINED that I would have that exact table (or something similar that cost thousands of dollars less) for my coffee table. But when given the chance, I declined. What??
So it must be that I just thought I wanted it, but really it doesn't fit in with my general decorating aesthetic. I think of my tastes as being traditional (even though everyone tells me I'm crazy and that I don't decorate traditionally at all) with touches of eclectic glam thrown in. Glam is tough though! I have to be very careful lest my house ends up looking like a Z Gallerie showroom or Mariah Carey's house.
And I think of lucite as a glam statement.

Have you guessed where I'm going with this? Okay, so it's pretty obvious at this point. I think I've finally decided where lucite will fit in my life.

I have been on an endless search for an end-of-bed bench! Really I've been desiring something old and french and gilded. But then I ran across the top picture and had a major wellwhatdoyaknow moment. PERFECT!!!

I'm not sure I have mentioned yet that our new bed is a monster. As in huge, takes up almost the entire room, we sold all our furniture and our clothes are in boxes in our closet, huge. So whatever makes its home at the end of the bed needs to be beautiful, but discreet. Love that the lucite legs just disappear.
This crazy canopy makes me more than a little nervous, but yellow always makes my heart beat just a bit faster. Yum yum.

Also, what I'm doing in our Master is leaning towards the conservative fancy look, and I think lucite gives a little modern edge to that. Even though it will probably end up being upholstered in something floral that will probably include pink. Don't judge.
What do you think? Do you love it or hate it? Take it or leave it?

Do you have any lucite/acrylic in your home? Do you wish you did? Do you wish I would so you can live vicariously through me?
Baylor is digging his souvenirs that I brought him back from England. His favorite is the "deckle deckle" bus (double decker bus) that his KK bought him.
Hate. Lucite. Hate it. Makes me think of the 80's, grandmothers and tacky faux rich people. Just say "no". -- Marcee

ReplyDeleteThat is really funny that it reminds you of grandmothers because I think of it as so modern! I clearly didn't pay much attention to decorating as a kid. Have you seen that avocado green is revving up in popularity right now? Too funny since our parents bitterly regretted that choice after the 70s.
Hate it.
ReplyDeleteDon't know why I even posted that...I'm sure you knew the answer already. Looks terribly cheap and would look good in a teenagers bedroom next to the fuzzy hot pink bean bag.
Like you, I am on the hunt for my end of the bed bench, my quintessestial end of the bed perfect bench. Not an easy search...so critical to the look of the entire room. Not easy! Any thoughts on where to find an affordable lucite bench? I really really like the idea of it......
