I watched The Soup right before falling asleep last night, and this was in my brain upon waking. I'm a chick, and today we're talking about me. (Ed. note: Oh so it's like every other day.)
It's time to take the plunge. I've despised my tile floors since the moment we closed on our home 5 years (!) ago. Hate is a word I hate to use (Don't say "hate" Mom Mom!), but man I hate tile floors outside of the bathroom. Boooooo. So big in South Florida, it is seriously difficult to find the rare house without tile throughout.
I've been saving my pennies for beautiful wood floors since that fated day, and wouldn't you know it? My sweet little Peeps has some raging allergies which led us to rip up the carpet in our upstairs so I was forced to put wood up there first. It's dark and awesome and I love it so much that I just can't wait another moment to finish up the downstairs.
And we're going fancy. From where we stand, this is our forever home and I say resale, schme-sale (who's selling in Florida? Good luck, homie.), we live here and we're GOING FOR IT.

These floors were done from upcycled pallets. Amazing.
Trust, I'm super aware that I don't live in a Parisian pied-à-terre, so I will not try to be super rustic and goofy. But there are no laws that say Americans living in a tropical zone can't have fab floors too.
We will continue the dark stain from upstairs, but I want it a little glossier (but not too too) and I'm considering an infusion of a few different shades to add interest.
Can I just give my two cents real quick on dark wood floors? I was so afraid to go for it. I read so many horrible things about having near-black floors (one blogger said she burst into tears 10 minutes after they were installed because she already had to break out the swiffer). Dramatic much?
It's not the floors, it's YOU. You certainly have to know your personality type to know whether you can live with them. And anyone who knows me knows that I could not be more laid back about my house. They show dust. Lot's of it! It doesn't phase me. I vacuum/swiffer/dust them once a week and before company is coming over. And I sincerely don't notice it otherwise. I also don't have dogs.
Let's continue.

I love this photo. It shows the break between rooms and it appears that the adjoining space has traditionally laid planks. This will probably be the situation in my home. Not quite sure yet.
Here, the chevron is reversed going into the next space. Awesome.

I'll talk about some other parquet designs we're considering in another post. How do you feel about chevron vs. herringbone? I'm nuts about it....anybody out there hate it? I find that hard to believe, but would be fascinated if such a person existed.
