Secrets From a {Reformed} Decorating Dummy: Mixing Ivory and White

I'm going to take you on a very short journey back to 3 years ago...a time when I really knew nothing about decorating.  Less than nothing.  I could pick stuff out of a Pottery Barn catalog and call it a day, but I didn't know how to put a room together with meaningful pieces that I loved.  Maybe I had a cute couch, but what about the rest of the room?  I'm still learning SO much every day...but I thought I'd start sharing with you some of the tips that I've picked up along the way.

My first big purchase as I began to dip my toes into the decorating pool was new drapes for our living and dining room.  I chose the brightest white available...I really didn't know what else to pick, truth be told.  Thankfully I still love them.  (Though stark white walls with billowing ivory curtains absolutely call to me with their siren song...sigh.  10 years.)

My second big purchase was 2 bergere chairs from an estate broker that I quickly had reupholstered.  Long story short, I was convinced I would need to have the wood painted white since they would be in the living room.  When explaining this to some savvy women at the fabric store, they first blessed me with a 'does not compute' look which then turned into a 'who is this fool?' side eye.  Girl, no.  Mix it up.

If I'd seen this room, I would have figured it out for myself.

I spent the next couple of years purposefully including whites and creams into the same spaces, and now I don't even pay attention anymore.  Mixing all shades of white, cream, and ivory gives a room visual depth.

Combined with ivory, whites are brighter.

The absolute key with any color combo, is bringing in different patterns and textures...here in neutral mixes of all shades of white and ivory.  The look is dramatic and sophisticated, rather than one-dimensional.

As usual, you can take visual cues from interiors and they translate elsewhere...

A few places I've mixed them up in my house...

The aforementioned chairs (now isn't that RIDICULOUS that I thought I couldn't keep them cream-colored?).

In my dining room (cream chairs, white slipped chairs, antique white table frame, white drapes)...

In my bedroom...

So there you have it...the first of many silly little lessons that flabbergasted me and changed to way I decorate.  Would you like to hear more?  Perhaps a series...

Baylor is in major kissy kissy mode lately which I LOVE.  You know who doesn't love it?  Our 4 year old neighbor who sat next to him through the Muppet movie.  Muah muah ewwwww stop! Pouty face. "She doesn't like my kisses." Repeat x 10.

Save them for me baby!!
