This is Trendy and Controversial ~ Animal Hide Rugs

I've mentioned cowhide rugs a few times lately, but I haven't asked what you think about them?  I will fully admit, I've always been a 'late adopter' when it comes to trends.  And I'm sure many people would say that this discussion should have happened 2 years ago and cowhides are played.  What can I say, I'm not an impulse shopper.  Plus, I know a lot of newbies to design blogs read this one and may never have given their $ .02 on the subject.

And while I'm always out for a deal, if I were to talk my husband into letting me use an animal hide in our house, I would most likely spend a little bit more to purchase from a responsible company.

I will admit, a year ago I was a little uncomfortable with them.  Amazing how a bunch of photos of gorgeous interiors can change your mind.  They really add a soft element of texture to a room.

Okay, lay it on me.  Gorgeous, you're saving for one now!  Not sure, something about them makes you feel a little skeevy.  Absolutely not, so gross you would never dream of such a thing.

Baylor - "We're getting a prescription."
Pharmacist- "Did your 2 year old just say 'prescription'?"
Me- "Yeah.  When I ask him if he slept good, he says 'I slept well.' "

  1. Honestly I would love one too! We even have corner street vendors set up with hanging hide. But it is my imagination that would keep me from it. I would like to justify my decision by saying..."well, they were going to kill the animal anyway for the meat (which I do eat, but can't really think about it), so I am just making sure I honor the animal and that all parts are not going to waste".

So what would my excuse be for the zebra rug that I ohhhhhh so want...there is none.

  2. I absolutely love them when I see photos of rooms like you've posted, but I'm not sure about really committing to one in my own home. I'm on the fence, but I'm like that with alot of design trends.
By the time I usually am coming around to the idea the trend has come and gone. But I still say the best design philosophy is "do what you love".
BTW, I just found your blog and am in the same area as you. I've been to Decor Once More and love it! I'm relatively new to the area and would love your suggestions for thrift and consignment shops! I love me some good junkin!

  3. i really like when a rug adds so much to a room and when it's something like zebra, it just looks amazing. and yet, can look so subtle.

  4. Hmmm...I'm totally on the fence on this one. I LOVE the look in the rooms you posted above. Just can't get past the fact that I would be walking on real hide with real hair on it. Maybe if I could find a good faux hide rug. Of course when I was a little girl, I thought nothing of carrying around my lucky rabbit foot key chain. Ewe! LOL.

  7. i love the look, BUT i would never, ever have a real animal skin on the floor of my home. There are so many fabrics that looks like animal prints, it's a much more karma friendly way to go.....
