Negative Nellie With My Blinders On

I am not an interior designer. What, you noticed?  In fact, quite often, I'm so terrible at decorating that I can't see beyond my own tastes and preferences.

And I love color...not because bold hues are en vogue, because I've ALWAYS liked color.

By the way I went clothes shopping this weekend for the first time in the history of ever, and I'm thrilled at the vibrant choices this season!!  An excuse to spend loads and loads of money as far as I'm concerned, because for years I've sought bright clothing and the choices have been slim and none.  Not this year, woo hoo!!  Stock up, I say.

But I digress.  I love color in homes.  And it is unfathomable to me that some people crave homes chock full of tan with pops of beige (trademark- Emily A. Clark).

So I found this home in this month's House Beautiful just a smidge underwhelming.

Not sure why it looks quite a bit more vibrant on my computer screen; it is a smorgasbord of taupe in the actual magazine.  I LOVE that art though (by Carolyn Carr).

I fully admit that I'm not appreciating the fine art and nuances of layering tone on tone textures here.  And while y'all know I love mixing up styles, this room (and whole Manhattan apartment) is so overwhelmingly traditional that, to me, the random modern touches just don't makes sense.  The acrylic coffee table? Don't get it.  Want it!  But cannot understand it in this space.  Those lamps hurt my face.

I do however LOVE designer Suzanne Rheinstein's great advice in this spread:

If you buy one good thing a year, in five years you will have 5 really good things.

As I've been telling the Peeps lately, some things are none of our beeswax.  It's absolutely none of my beeswax if somebody desires the calming (I'm guessing) effect of neutrals throughout their own homes.

The dining room is quite a bit more colorful, albeit still very traditional.  This is not a grandma's house, these people are in their 30's.

There is no question this pad is beautiful and positively brimming with high quality furniture, lasting antiques and uber-expensive fabrics.  Maybe it's just too fancy?  Perhaps the lack of vibrant color just reads as stuffy to me.

Obviously, neutrals are the wisest investment...color through accessories not only makes smart financial sense, the neutral palette will carry you a long way into the future as styles (and your personal tastes) evolve.

I do love this little nook.

What do you think? Could you live here?  Maybe you think a lot of color is cheap and tawdry...don't worry, you can say it.
